Mapledurham, Oxfordshire: Letter concerning tythes
Item
23 May 1639
2 folios
Anthony Langstone, London, to Dr Renn, Dean of Windsor, warning him that Mr Day's last proceeding does much concern the Chapel of St George, for he has entitled His Majesty by inquisition to the portion of tythe enjoyed by them for many years. Sir Charles Blount's interest is but a lease for three years at a rent of £40 a year. "I have searched the fine and surrender of the Prior of Lewis to Kinge Henry the Eighte, and therein is noe mencion of this porcion, yet Mr Day under pretence of that Surrender hath intituled His Majestie to the porcion, and I suppose under the pretence of some ancient title wherein the prior hath many hundred of years beene heretofore mencioned to some title. To looke into the depth of ancient recordes both of the tower and other places to a strainger is very difficulte."
