Thomas Knight, Wyvold, to Sir Thomas Rich, knight and baronet, at his house at Sunning, co. Berks, setting out the case of Mapledurham hospital. Charles Lyster by his will of 23 October 1613, proved 27 November 1613, bequeathed to Sir Richard Blunt his lease (for 1000 years) of Coxwell Heath, co. Berks, to be sold, and the sum realised to be employed on erecting a hospital for relieving a convenient number of poor people, or a free school for poor children in Bissiter or Mapplederum or in Farrington, co. Berks. By Letters Patent of 1 April 1617 Sir Richard founded the hospital at Mapplederum and places therein 6 poor people and called it Charles Lyster's Hospital, and erected a monument in the church to the memory of Lyster. By the Patent he allowed the 6 poor people 2s apiece weekly and 2 loads of wood apiece a year. He died in May 1628. The his son Sir Charles Blunt succeeded to the management of the hospital and allowed the poor 2s a week but subtracted the wood. He died in June 1644. His son Michael Blunt and his guardians paid 2s a week until 1647 when he subtracted 6s a week besides the wood. He died in 1649 before he came to the full age of 21 years, and was succeeded by his brother Walter, who, or his guardian, allowed only 18d a week to the poor "untill within these 2 yeares last past divers of the poore people beeing dead he hath neither filled up theire places not intendeth to fill them up, and denyeth pay to Tobie Mathews, an almesman."
"This pious worke by the Kingdomes sad and lamentable distractions hath bin for many yeares obstructed", also by non-appearance of the Commissioners to prepare Rich for the next intended conference with other commissioners.
