Chalcots, Middlesex: Letter concerning application for building lease
Item
2 August 1831
2 folios
John Shaw, junior, Christ's Hospital, to the Rev George Bethell concerning an application from Mr Bromley, solicitor, of Grays Inn Square, for a building lease of 18 acres of the College estate adjoining Regents Park and extending to Primrose Hill (marked on accompanying plans), for the purpose of a botanical institution to be established by a society. A sketch by Bromley's architect enclosed. "It is important to tell you that we understand Mr Bromley to be a gentleman of great respectability, that he has pursued the scheme from his passion for botany and that he and the members of the proposed society are impelled by the desire of promoting the science and have great reason to believe that they will be assisted by the public in so desirable an institution, which is likely from the great success of the Zoological Society in the neighbourhood. Their architect Mr Clarke appears a man of considerable talent... My father feels that the successful establishment of a great public institution on the College estate must add very greatly to its value."
