Chalcots, Middlesex: Observations concerning the railway
Item
1 February 1832
2 folios
Observations on the proposed Railway, drawn up by a subscriber, showing its many advantages. "The locomotive steam engines are prohibited from burning coal - no smoke, therefore, can issue from the flues. The rail on which the wheels run being a narrow rim of wrought iron, without any unevenness of surface, comparatively little noise is heard when a train of carriages, conveying perhaps 150 persons, is in movement, and the rattling of wheels of an ordinary Stage Coach conveying a tenth of the number on a turnpike road, is, in a great measure, avoided."
