College Accounts: Books of Dues
Sub-series
1795 - 1909
These series of three volumes, bound in white vellum, take their title from that written on the cover of the first. They show the account of the money due to the Provost and Fellows. Each year they show the total amounts received for fines for the grant of new leases (not entered in the audit books), and other sums for licences of alienation. Each spread then shows the individual stipend and allowances of the provost and each of the fellows and on the other side his disbursements, mainly for bread and beer. Receipt of the balance is in most cases acknowledged by a signature. Only in 1806 are there signs of additional calculations. Sizings for Dr Goodall and Dr Keate, as Head and Lower Master, are also shown but not signed for.
These volumes seem to be a later stage in the accounting process than the rental and disbursement books (62/239- 262) but this may simply reflect a change of system over time. A volume marked College Accounts (COLL/B4) contains much the same information, without signatures, from 1812 but after Dr Roberts' retirement as Bursar in 1818 relates only to amounts due to himself.
The final volume reflects the changed state of affairs after the Public Schools Act, with no entries for fines and from 1900 only the Provost, Vice-Provost, Head Master and Bursar included.
