John Edward Talbot (1870-1937) was the third son of John Gilbert Talbot (1835-1910) and Hon. Meriel Sarah Lyttelton, the sister of Edward Lyttelton, Head Master 1905-1916, who was John's tutor. John was a King's Scholar from 1883.3 - 1889.2 and had a distinguished Eton career, ending as Captain of the School. He was Newcastle Medallist in 1887 and 1888, and in the Select in 1886, Secretary of the Musical Society, a member of Pop and played in the XI in 1889, College Wall 1887 - 1888 and Mixed Wall in 1888. He went to Magdalen College, Oxford, to read classics, obtaining a 1st class in Mods. and Lit. Hum and a 2nd in Theology. He became Senior Examiner for the Board of Education.

According to a letter pasted in, the diary was purchased by Hope Emily Allen in 1938 and given to a member of the Talbot family.
