At Eton from 1847.1 - 1855.1, (FV; WAC) he was in the Newcastle Select in 1853, Medallist in 1854 and Scholar in 1855. After taking a first in Greats at Balliol College, Oxford, where he won the Gaisford Greek Verse Prize and the Chancellor's Latin Prize, he became a barrister. He was Counsel to the Chairmen of Committees of the House of Lords and Master of the Grocers' Company, and also commanded the 3rd Bttn. Middlesex Rifle Volunteers, being awarded the VD.
