Feels that one of the things making him hesitate is the amount of work Cyril Alington is supposed to get though; he has always had on hand lots of jobs not really connected with Eton including preaching a good deal in other places. Many of the details which harass the head of a smaller school never cross his path. The essence of the Eton system is that a great deal of autonomy must be left to housemasters. School run through staff and older boys. Provost, Vice-Provost and Lower Master all ready to give every kind of help. Tuppy Headlam delighted at the prospect. People may have a picture of Etonians as `bad-mannered bloods' but there has been an enormous change in the outlook of Etonians in the last 20 years, partly economic - they must nearly all earn their own livings. Eric Powell and the Provost think the general atmosphere is better than it has ever been. His excuse for this long letter is that he is extremely fond of Eton.
