Son of Sir Henry Maxwell-Lyte, historian of Eton. After Fontwell Preparatory School, he came to Eton as a King's Scholar in September 1893. He was in the Newcastle Select and ended as Captain of the School. Leaving in July 1900, he obtained a demyship at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he obtained a 1st in History. He became an examiner for the Board of Education. A knee problem rendered him unfit for military service and during the war he worked for the Ministry of Munitions.
