Arthur Benson to John Bramston

Good of him to write again, but if the Governing Body want an outside candidate they will ask Gilkes. He has been deluged with letters and parental questions. Since he made up his mind, the thought of breaking up his life at Eton has been much with him. Should not be pleased if told to run. It is not a temptation. Not that he is not ambitious but he is diffident. A strong direct invitation might seem a duty but nothing short of that. However, he will think it over and write the next day.
