Youngest son of William and Anne Keate, he was educated at Bath Grammar School and then apprenticed to his uncle Thomas Keate, the surgeon. He was appointed staff surgeon to the army in 1798 but was also surgeon to George III, George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria. In 1813 he succeeded his uncle as surgeon at St George's Hospital, a post he held until 1853, and he served as President of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1831 and 1839.
He married Isabella, daughter of Henry Ramus, an Indian civil servant, and had four daughters and three sons, Charles Robert Henry, Robert William and Edward.
