Third son and fourth child of Richard and Beatrice Durnford, he did not follow his father and older brothers to Eton but went instead to the naval colleges of Osborne and Dartmouth before making his career in the Royal Navy. His final post was as Director of Naval Training, from 1945 - 1947, when he was awarded the CB, and he retired in 1948 as a Vice-Admiral. He subsequently became Governor of the Star and Garter Home, Richmond and also mayor of Chelsea 1962 - 1963.
He married Marie de Lancey, daughter of Rupert Greene of Melbourne, in 1936.
