Grandson of an assistant master, Hubert Brinton, Patrick Strong was elected a King's Scholar in 1944. He trained as a doctor but retrained as an archivist and was appointed Keeper of the College Library and Collections in 1966, retiring in 1986. His wife, Felicity Ranger, was also a distinguished archivist, and in his later years at Eton Patrick concentrated on cataloguing the early archives of the central administration of the College,
