Fanny Keate: Letter from Countess Pauline Neale

Level

Item

Date

14 December 1814

Content description

Much bewailing the Prince of Orange's departure. Many mentions of the various friends they have in common and one, Emily Jenner (?) spends most of her evenings with her at the Pss. Thrilled her own sister is also now in Berlin. Sister's husband is at Torgau and they await news of its surrender.Still dreads the 'scourge who has not been taken' whose genius and 'exertions in France may cost us very dear'. The whole country is afflicted with general contagious disorders. Whilst she was writing this letter a man died in her house, leaving a widow and 6 children and the wailing aroused her. There are rumours of Peace but they cannot be relied on and a prolonged war is a melancholy thought.
The Provost and Mrs Goodall remain uppermost in her thoughts. Encloses a cartoon-like picture of Napoleon full of meanings: in which all the wretched victims he has sacrificed to his ambitions form the lineaments of his face. The spider forms his heart and the clutch of fate grips him. The collar represents the Rhine which divides them. The eagle forms the hat. The initial letters represent the five leagued powers that crushed him.
Addressed to Mrs Keate, Eton College, Windsor
