Fanny Keate: Letter from Countess Pauline Neale
Item
3 May 1814
From Berlin. Glorious termination to this terrific war, Europe is indebted to England's exertion. She could now visit Paris but would prefer England. For many days there were many tears despite the heaven in their souls. Fervently wishing the Sovereign to be rewarded in England. Tells Fanny to see him, he has the most feeling soul. Fanny may have aluded to rumours of a Princess ('the amiable one') suitable as a new wife for the King.Asks if she has seen the General who it appears has lost his wife. Praises General Blucher who is 76 but impetuous and worshipped by the troops, 'sight of him inspired them with an unshaken confidence in success'. Also General York thanks for preserving the finest corps in the army. Writes that the goods plundered from Italy should be assembled in Rome in a temple built at the French nations expense. Writes of the bravery of Bairahta (?) and the cowardly conduct of others who had been an object of terror. Detailed.
In a postcript she adds that the letter is delivered thanks to the Duke of Cumberland.
Addressed to Mrs Keate, Eton College, Windsor
