Title

Fanny Keate: Letter from Countess Pauline Neale

Level

Item

Date

28 January 1839

Content description

From Berlin
Would love to return to visit despite being robbed on two earlier journeys and nearly suffering a watery grave. Thanks for the tokens from her accomplished daughters and had wanted her nephew to copy one picture but he had just crushed his leg to marmalade when his horse slipped on an iron bridge.
Heard from Rome that there is a complete invasion of English to the great delight of the natives.Few foreigners in Berlin but bitter winter and a few balls. One with a special display of ladies with wigs and hoops and straight faces dancing like a machine. Very well received. Also illustrations from Lord Byron and Walter Scott. The best was his most Christian Majesty being ..... by a - Rothschild - who except for his faith was a very handsome youth. Entrusting the letter to be carried by hand by an eldest son due to travel to England for a year. .
Addressed to Mrs Keate, N:4 Cloister, Windsor
Febry 8th 1839
