Level

Item

Date

25 January 1812

Content description

From Margaretta Farm. More medical advice which he cant offer for Margaret as he does not know her symptoms, but suggests she takes pills with Soap and Rhubarb- Surprised that Margaret has received a letter from her brother who feels cast off by his family. His father describes his conduct as infamous and behaviour as undutiful and his sister should inform him that he has bought an estate, invested all his capital AND borrowed £1000 from Dr Keate. This should prevent asking for money. 'Heaven pity the Regiment that is commanded by such an officer and the delinquents that are fined by such a Judge!!'
Strong praise for Mr Keate, Dr Keate's brother being appointed to the Chair of Justice. Reporting that he is trying to improve all his river banks and those of other colonists around him in Clenchwarton through the 'Court of Sewers'. Dr Keate should see a huge improvement when he next visits, in August, which he must. Has been asked to dine with 'the very rich Mr Bagge' but he will decline as he does not dine with strangers however rich. Sorry she cant go out but better not to be in crowded rooms 'heated like a hot house to force pineapples'.
On outside: clenchwarton dated Jan 25th 1812
Addressed to Mrs Brown, at the revd. Dr Keate's Eton College, near Windsor
