Title
Fanny Keate: Letter from M.G. Chapman
Level
Item
Date
16 May 1849
Content description
From Repose (??) near Malta May 16th 1849
to Grandmama, writing en route to England, the letter to be 'via Marseilles' describing landing at Suez, going for a walk by moonlight where there seemed to be little more than roofless houses and old gateways and then the 'van' taking them the 17 hours through the desert to Cairo, struck by the Pyramids and went through the Tombs of the Kings. Amazed by contrasts with lack of greenery, much of it dry and sterile.Rose at dawn to ride by donkey and visit the Citadel and see the magnificent view of the whole of Cairo. Saw the Pacha's new mosque being built and visited the Turkish bazaar in a rush for the Nile boats which (as is a matter of course) ran aground. Quickly transferred to a 'dirty, hot, disagreeable concern' Reached Alexandria at 6 the next evening, not nearly as nice a place as Cairo. A mixture of European and Asiatic. Pompey's Pillar which they passed is not an important looking object. Hoping she will get to Windsor on 29th but it is not a fast ship and when they reach Southampton depends on the winds and the waves.
Signed M.G. Chapman
Addressed to Mrs Keate, Cloisters, Windsor via Marseilles
