Margaretta Brown: Letter from George Rose to Dr Brown
Item
22 July 1804
Outer wrapper addressed to Doctor Brown, letter addressed to 'Sir' apologising for not being able to help with his daughter in law, Mrs Rose's request to find a position in Britain to get Doctor Brown out of Russia. He writes that he does not have the influence that people believe and that there are so many claims on Mr Pitt he cannot ask for his help. One option could be the position of Physician at Chelsea College, about £200 a year but with 'apartments, cooks, candles', but he dare not raise his hopes.
Enclosed the reply from Dr Brown 25 July 1804: He had not realised that Mrs Rose was asking for help to find Dr Brown a position. Expresses a gratitude for his letter and confirms his wish to live in his native country with his son in the Cavalry and daughter married at Eton. He understands how difficult it will be to find a position but with the change in the political opinion of the Court in Berlin is eager to leave. He wishes the current Physician to Chelsea Hospital well but asks to be informed if for any reason the position becomes vacant.
