Margaretta Brown: Letter from Ireland

Level

Item

Date

4 December 1834

Content description

Letter written from Desart, near Callan, Ireland, to 'My dear Aunt' Completely overwritten at 90 degrees so difficult to read: Very rough journey from the Bristol Channel to Ireland ' Mama has told me of the festivities at Eton'. Lady Decarts (?) brother in law is here and most amusing, he said he had some brother in Uncle Keate's house. Irish roads are of a curious construction. With deep ditches, intersected by rivers and waterfalls and bubbling brooks and never wider than seven feet.
'The Paddies are very much afraid of their faith. Irish Churches are funny places'. Lots of hunting and shooting. At Xmas and New Years Day the boys and girls come to all the great houses. Good fun on New Years Day with Charades. Much partying, dressing up and kicking of legs to a cracked fiddle where he was considered a 'capital performer'. Hopes to see her before he goes back to Oxford, via Liverpool.
Addressed to Mrs Keate, Eton College, Buckinghamshire. Added on 'A letter from poor Charlie(?) Keate.
