Son of James Fitzgerald, Earl of Kildare, and (1766) Duke of Leinster. After his father was created Marquess of Kildare in 1761 he took the courtesy title of Earl of Offaly but he died of smallpox in his father's lifetime. His mother was Emily Lennox, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Richmond.
