John Keate: Letter from Duke of Newcastle
Item
3 September 1828
Concerns Eton [Newcastle] Scholarships, has been delayed in sending a proposal for them. Proposes to try the scheme for a few years before settling the foundation in perpetuity. His object is national utility, if this means young men who have been education at Eton shall taken with them a just knowledge of an affection for a religion which shall regulate their future conduct, the scholarships shall not have been established in vain. Hopes that Eton will be an example to all schools. Written from Ramsgate.
