Thesiger had been a member of the club for more than 70 years and in 1954 the Society awarded him the Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal ‘for work and travel among the Arabs’. He became an Honorary Vice-President of the Society on 14 June 1990 and on the same date delivered the Anniversary Lecture to the Society, entitled ‘Retrospect’. A copy of the lecture was published in ‘Asian Affairs, vol. XXI, Part III’.
