John Carter archive: 'The Confines of Criticism' by Carter
Item
1930-1970
3 envelopes
Working papers and correspondence relating to the posthumous publication of A. E. Housman's inaugural lecture at Cambridge entitled 'The Confines of Criticism'. Carter, who wrote an introduction for the published lecture and jointly wrote an appendix with John Sparrow entitled 'Shelley, Swinburne and Housman', was responsible for pushing for its publication. These working papers document that process. The appendix is essentially a digest of Carter and Sparrow's article 'Shelley, Swinburne and Housman' written for the Times Literary Supplement in 1968 (a revised version of a previous 1963 article entitled 'Housman, Shelley and Swinburne').
