John Carter archive: Papers relating to Carter's final illness and death
Item
1975
2 folders and 1 envelope
A collection of papers relating to Carter's final illness and death. There are letters written to Carter, and often replied to by Ernestine or by secretaries, during Carter's last illness before his death in 1975. Ernestine's replies are included in this file, and often state that Carter is ill and cannot reply himself.
There is another file containing correspondence and legal documentation surrounding the sale of 2 A. E. Housman notebooks that were in Carter's possession before his death. They were sold at the Carter Sotheby's sale. After being sold, the notebooks were discovered to still be the property of Housman's legal executor Symons. The matter was settled in an amicable way with Ernestine and appears to have been an honest mistake.
Lastly there is a photocopy of Lord Redcliffe Maud's address at Carter's memorial service.
