E. W. Hermon was shot through the chest while crossing open ground on the first day of the Battle of Arras, 9th April 1919. The contents of E. W. Hermon's pocket on the day he died, bears a bullet hole from one of the bullets that killed him. The contents of his pocket was probably returned to Ethel Hermon by E. W. Hermon's manservant, Gordon Buxton.
