Content description
Letters and manuscripts written by and about William Johnson Stone. There are over 150 ALS written to his family; a small group of letters written by Henry Jackson, M. R. James, A. Austen Leigh, H. E. Luxmoore and Edmond Warre, all written as testimonials for the Education Office. There is also a group of letters written upon the publication of On the Use of Classical Metres in English by H. C. Beeching, Robert Bridges, W. L. Courthorpe, A. E. Crawley, W. L. Donaldson, J. H. Hallard, R. J. Lloyd, J. W. Mackail, B. Paul Newman, T. S. Omond, Frank H. Rawlins, George Saintsbury and Herbert Warren. The papers include a group of 50 letters written to his brothers Ned (Edward Wellington Stone) and Frank after William's early death at the age of 28.
Manuscripts consist of notebooks of notes on history and classical subjects, a copybook of verses and translations, and about forty different autograph manuscript poems in English, Latin and German.
