These papers were possibly housed with M R James’s copies of his own publications in his rooms in Eton College where he lived and died as Provost in 1936. Subsequent College Librarians Patrick Strong and Paul Quarrie appear to have made initial attempts to remove the diverse related papers and correspondence that James had inserted in a number of his own books and arrange them separately during the 1970s. Additional related materials have been added to these papers since the 1970s possibly from different sources. They have been arranged chronologically by publication date so that the inserts may be understood in their original context

M R James' books and many other publications by him and by others about him are catalogued separately.
