Sir Robert Birley (1903-1982) was an English educationalist, historian and academic. Educated at Rugby School and Balliol College, Oxford, he began his career as a History Master at Eton in 1926 before becoming Head Master of Charterhouse School in 1935. During his time at Charterhouse, he was a principal author of the Fleming Report (1944), which examined the relationship between the public schools and the wider education system.
Following the Second World War, Birley served as Educational Adviser to the Allied Control Commission in the British Zone of occupied Germany (1947-1949), where he was involved in the reconstruction and denazification of the German education system. He returned to Eton as Head Master in 1949, remaining there until 1964. He subsequently became Visiting Professor of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa (1964-1967), where he and his wife, Elinor, were active opponents of apartheid. He was also appointed Honorary Governor of Michaelhouse School in KwaZulu-Natal. In 1967 he became Professor and Head of the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities at City University, London, a position he held until 1971. From 1968 until his death, he was also Professor of Rhetoric at Gresham College, London. He was knighted in 1967.
Birley was an influential figure in twentieth-century British education, combining a career in teaching and educational administration with a commitment to educational reform, European affairs and opposition to apartheid. He died at Somerton, Somerset, on 22 July 1982, aged 79.

Nicholas (Nick) R. F. Welsh (1948-2023) was an English teacher and educationalist who taught at Eton College for forty years, serving as Head of English from 1990 to 1998. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 28 February 1948 and grew up there, attending St John's College before moving to Michaelhouse School in KwaZulu-Natal. While at Michaelhouse in 1965, he met the distinguished educationalist and former Eton Headmaster Sir Robert Birley. Birley made a lasting impression on Welsh, and they remained friends until Birley's death. His influence can also be seen in Welsh's own approach to teaching and education.
In 1966, Welsh moved to the United Kingdom to study English at Magdalen College, Oxford. In 1979 he briefly left education to work at Lazard's merchant bank in London, but subsequently decided to return to teaching. He studied for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at Goldsmiths, University of London, achieving the highest distinction in teaching and education. He began his teaching career at Forest Hill Comprehensive School in London and then taught at Watford Boys Grammar School.
Welsh joined the academic staff at Eton College in 1972 and remained there until his retirement in 2012. During his forty years at Eton, he taught English and served as Head of English from 1990 to 1998. His teaching combined a strong grounding in English literature with wide-ranging discussion and an interest in connections between literature and other subjects.
After retiring from Eton, Welsh moved to Oxford, where he continued to teach as a private and online tutor to students around the world. He married Sally in 1973, and they had two children, Emma and Simon. Welsh died in Oxford on 16 January 2023, aged 74.
Following his death, his family and Eton College established the Nick Welsh Scholarship Fund in his memory, supporting future pupils and continuing his commitment to education.
