Personal diary of Edward Hope Vere, describing his diplomatic work and leisure activities while posted to Madrid from 1915 to 1919; tours to various places in Spain; leave in Scotland and swearing-in as Justice of the Peace for Lanarkshire and member of King's Bodyguard for Scotland; transfer to Cairo Jun 1919; signing of peace agreement with Turkey; tours to various places in Egypt and working with General Allenby; meetings with Sultan of Turkey; illness; promotion to 1st Secretary Sep 1919; role in founding of Anglo-Egyptian Association; return to London Jan 1920; transfer to Belgrade and tours to various parts of Yugoslavia; leave to London and Scotland; promotion to 1st Secretary at Buenos Aires and arrival Jul 1921; visits to Rio de Janeiro; transfer to Montevideo Feb 1922; arrival of Sir Ernest Shackleton's body from South Georgia 29 Feb, memorial service; desire of Lady Shackleton that his body be returned to South Georgia and Hope-Vere's role in arrangements; tours to various parts of Uruguay; attempted assassination of Archbishop of Montevideo; transfers to Buenos Aires and Montevideo; tours and official duties; transfer to Buenos Aires Dec 1922; illness and transfer home on leave at Biarritz and England and Scotland Mar 1923; meeting with Joseph Conrad; transfer to Christiania, Norway Sep 1923; winter sports; requests transfer after further illness; to Biarritz and England for recuperation from May to July; advised to retire; he lived in Biarritz until he died in November 1924

Hope Vere's note at the front of the diary states that a full account of his stay at Madrid 1915-1919 can be found in his private letters to Gaslee & Kopple of the Foreign Office, the copies of which are in the Chancellery of the Embassy for safekeeping. They are not state papers and belong to him and he had them bound together and registered. See MS 599 03 01
