Winthrop Mackworth Praed collection: Susan Praed’s commonplace book
Item
[1824-1837]
1 volume
The handwritten volume principally contains a number of verses written by her father, Sergeant Praed or by her brother Winthrop Praed. However also included are translations of Latin or Greek texts which were sent to her by Winthrop and verses she wrote herself in reply to one she received from her brother. While it belonged to Susan Praed, the volume contains several different contributors, including Winthrop Praed and others whose handwriting could not be identified.
Notable verses include:
‘Twelfth Night’ Characters by Sergeant Praed
‘Susan’s answer to the Foregoing’ by Winthrop Praed
‘To Elizabeth Praed, 8 years old’ by Winthrop Praed
‘You’ve only got to curtsey’ by Winthrop Praed
‘The Dying Girl to her Lover’ by Winthrop Praed
‘The Runaway’ by Winthrop Praed
‘Hereafter’ by Winthrop Praed
‘Epistles in verse’ by Winthrop Praed
‘Answers to the foregoing’ by Susan Praed
‘The young Whig’ by Winthrop Praed
‘Something on nothing’ by Winthrop Praed
‘Knight’s lot’ by Winthrop Praed
‘From the Brazen Head’ by Winthrop Praed
The volume contains details of when some of the verses were written and which appear to have been written by Susan Praed while compiling the book. There are later annotations made throughout the volume by Sir George Young (3rd Baronet) which provides comments on the entries.
