Martin Frank Whiteley was born in 1930. Educated at Eton from 1943, he was in the house of Hubert Horton-Smith Hartley and his wife Grizel and enjoyed a long and close relationship with them. At Eton he was Captain of Games and Keeper of Lower Chapel. After Eton he joined the Rifle Brigade for National Service and signed on. In 1955 he returned to Eton for two years as Adjutant of the Corps. He rejoined the Army and after his discharge he came back to Eton in 1960 when Robert Birley invited him to return to run the physical training programme for boys. He was involved in sports, horse riding and the Eton Beagles to the 1980s. He was also a specialist tutor, served on the Collections Committee and was Secretary of the General List. In 1973 he becaume a House Master. He married Lady Anne Patricia Neville in 1971 and they had three children. Martin was also on the Horse Trials Committee in the 1960s and an Olympic Selector from 1969-1972. Martin died at Eton aged 53 in March 1984.

Autograph letters of Grizel and Hubert Hartley to Martin Frank Whiteley (1931-1984), a former boy in their boarding house at Eton, (who had joined the Army after National Service and then after his discharge, had returned to Eton as Assistant Master and Adjutant of the CCF) and to his wife Anne, describing life at Eton and members of the Eton community and her later life at Dorney and Marlow

Provenance

Received and collected by Martin and Anne Whiteley in their various homes. Donated to Eton College Library by Lady Anne Whiteley.

The letters have been arranged in chronological order, respecting the order in which they were kept by Martin and Anne Whiteley. Some undated letters, kept separately have been returned to their place, where this could be confirmed by the content or from information in other letters.
