Lawrence family archive: Autograph letters to Louisa and Mary Lawrence

Level

Series

Date

1870-1912

Extent & medium

c.673 letters

Content description

Most of the letters are addressed to Louisa Lawrence, or else equally with Mary, while a few are written solely to Mary.

There is a large collection of letters from the Paget family, who had medical connections to Sir William Lawrence and were close family friends, often spending holidays together.

The most famous of their correspondents are Henry James, George Meredith, Robert Browning, James Russell Lowell, Joseph Lister and Louis Pasteur.

The dates on the envelopes were added by the sisters. None of the sisters replies are included in the archive.

The letters in this collection go up to 1912, although both died in 1920, there are no letters for the last eight years of their life.

Associated material

Many of the letters in this series are catalogues on the Library's internal autograph letters database
