The papers of Mario Caccia (1830-1879)

Mario Caccia was born in 1830, the eldest son of Antonio and Sabina Caccia. He enlisted as a solider to help with the fight for Italian independence alongside his brother Fabio, participating in the revolution of 1848-1849 as part of the Sardinian army.
He resigned from the army in 1855, re-joining in 1859 and was quickly promoted to sub-lieutenant the same year and Captain in 1860. He was decorated with two medals for bravery in addition to gaining the Cross of the Military Order of Savoy, becoming a Knight of the Order of the Crown of San Maurizio and Lazzaro and a Companion of the Order of the Crown of Italy.
In 1865, he was promoted to the rank of Major, in 1873 to Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel in 1878.
In 1869, he married his sister-in-law, Clara Birch, the sister of his Fabio Caccia’s wife Pauline Birch, who had grown up in Italy. They had two daughters, Alma Sabina and Margaret Yule and two sons Aroldo and Mario. However soon after Mario’s birth in 1874, Clara’s health began to decline and she died in 1875.
Mario Caccia died in 1879 and given a funeral with full military honours.
