The papers of Anthony Mario Caccia (1869-1962)

Anthony Mario Felix Caccia was born in Britain in 1869, the younger son of Fabio Julian Caccia, (the youngest son of Antonio Caccia and Sabina Lamb). He married his first cousin, Fanny Theodora Birch, daughter of Azim Salvatore Birch, on 24 September 1901 and they had one son, Harold Anthony Caccia.
He graduated from Oxford University, before joining the Indian Forestry Service in 1889. He served first as the Assistant Commissioner of Forests, before becoming Deputy Commissioner in 1897 and finally conservator in 1913. He also served as the Director of Forest Services in England between 1911 and 1926.
During the First World War, he became a Major in the British Army attached to the British Military Mission at French Headquarters.
Between 1919 and 1920, Anthony Mario was a Secretary of the Supreme War Council and was part of the negotiating team at the Paris Peace conference that culminated in the Treaty of Versailles.
Towards the end of his life, Caccia settled in Oxford, becoming a don and teaching forestry.
He died on Oxfordshire on 30 July 1962.
