The various volumes contain a mixture of diaries and journals. The main purpose of his diaries was to record his appointments and his daily activities, whereas his journals were used to record longer reflections about his day and particular places he visited. They cover his time at Eton through to the last year of his life.
The volumes have been placed broadly in chronological order by the cataloguing archivist.
