The box contains various lined notebooks with notes concerning his travels by boat, to various places including Samoa, Tahiti, Chile, Hong Kong, Fiji and China. The notes were used in writing Slow Boats Home.
A number of the notebooks contain loose notes, receipts or business cards, created or collected during his trip.
The notes are all in Young’s hand. The contents of the notebooks vary between a travel diary providing brief descriptions of the places he visited and the people he met; and literary notes that acted as a brainstorm for the final work.
