The work was commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival, with the first performance given at Gloucester on 25 August 1971
Papers relating to their collaboration on ‘The Tree of Life’ including a manuscript score; manuscript notes and drafts; corrected and fair copy typescripts, and printed copies of the work; a copy of the contract between Hoddinott and Merchant and the publishers; programmes for various performances of the oratorio with related letters enclosed; and press cuttings reviewing the first performance.
Also included are letters between Merchant and Hoddinott concerning the work and the drafting process
The manuscript score is an oversized item and housed in a separate box and includes a published copy of the score, published by Oxford University Press, London: 1971. The copy is inscribed and signed by Hoddinott to Merchant
