Paul Merchant was the son of Moelwyn Merchant. He attended St George’s School as a Choral Scholar. He began writing poetry at a young age, winning several poetry prizes. He attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge before going to Greece where he produced a volume of translations from Modern Greek, which was published by Ted Hughes as No.4 of the series ‘Modern Poetry in Translation’.

He has published various works of poetry including ‘House of Cards’; ‘Stones’; ‘Self Water Island’; and ‘Born from a Stag’s Heart’

In 1968, along with Ted Hughes, Eric Cleave and his father Moelwyn Merchant, he founded the Rougemont Press.

He taught at several universities before settling at the University of Warwick.
Along with his father, he later established the Windmill Hill press in the basement of his home in Warwickshire, before moving to Portland, Oregon
