The collection consists of autograph letters and cards which are generally short in nature. They contain descriptions of places she has been or news of common acquaintances. They also make brief references to life at Eton.
The letters cover the period when Payne first became an assistant master at Eton College through to when he was a house master. During this time Grizel Hartley and her husband Hubert were living in Dorney House, Windsor.
