Moulton-Barrett archive: Letters from and to Elizabeth Barrett-Browning, her relatives and acquaintances
File
[19th century]
9 envelopes and 2 folders
A collection of autograph letters from and to Elizabeth Barrett-Browning, her relatives and acquaintances.
One folder contains early Elizabeth letters to Alfred and other relatives, including a childhood letter from Elizabeth to her grandmother. There are also letters to Mary Moulton-Barrett (Elizabeth's mother) and a letter from 'Bro' and 'Stormie' (Elizabeth's brothers). The other folder contains letters from 'Bro' to Elizabeth together with letters from Sam to Elizabeth and Henrietta. The letters range in date from 1821 to 1826.
These early letters are supplemented by sixteen letters and poems written by the Moulton-Barrett children for family birthdays, including one from Mary Moulton-Barrett to her daughter Elizabeth, a valentine sent by Elizabeth to Lizzie Barrett and four letters from Mary Moulton-Barrett to Arabella Graham-Clarke between 1809 and 1815. Also included are copies of letters from Elizabeth to 'Stormie', transcribed by Jose Moulton-Barrett, copies of letters from Edward Moulton-Barrett in what was a bound notebook and two letters from Elizabeth Barrett Williams to Judith Barrett, dated 6 November 1794 and 12 January 1795.
The later letters in this box include nine notes from Elizabeth to Miss Mitford, with twenty three envelopes and a fragment of a letter to Miss Mitford from 27 December 1842. The earlier part of this letter is at Wellesley College, America. There are also thirteen letters from Elizabeth to Isa Blagden, mostly undated although they are estimated to have been written between 1851 and 1861. Most of these were sent by messenger from Casa Guidi. The remaining material consists of two letters to Pen Barrett-Browning from P. Bume-Jones (1901) and Reginald Smith (1911), a transcript of a Ruskin letter, two unidentified envelopes addressed to Elizabeth, one unidentified envelope addressed to Sarianna Browning (Robert Browning's sister) and the burial document of Romagnoli.
