Title

Moulton-Barrett archive: Images of Hope End

Level

File

Administrative / Biographical history

Edward Barrett Moulton-Barrett bought Hope End in 1809. It was a 500 acre estate near the Malvern Hills in Ledbury, Herefordshire. Elizabeth Barrett-Browning spent her childhood here. Edward converted the stately Georgian gome into stables and built a new mansion of Turkish design including minarets. The mismanagement of the sugar plantations forced Edward to sell Hope End at public auction in 1832.

Content description

A collection of images of Hope End.
There are three watercolours:
1. Watercolour by Miss Steers is from a drawing that belonged to Major Altham (an annotation on this watercolour incorrectly dates it as 1802, however the house was not build by this date so more likely dates from c.1889 - see letter from George G. Moulton-Barrett to Robert Browning dated 7 April 1889 - MS 682 01 02 01)
2. Watercolour by one of the Moulton-Barrett children
3. Watercolour by Henrietta which is now mounted.

There is also a colour pencil sketch in a black frame and two photographs, one of Hope End after it had been re-facaded by the Moulton-Barretts and the other is of an engraving of the house in the 18th century before the re-facaded.

Provenance

Part of the Edward R. Moulton-Barrett bequest.
