Administrative / Biographical history

Edward George Barrett (1822–1907) was the eldest son of Captain George Goodin Barrett (1792–1854) and Elizabeth Turner. He was the brother of Richard Barrett and Elizabeth Georgiana (Lizzie) Barrett (1833–1918), and cousin and brother-in-law to Alfred Moulton-Barrett.

Born in England, he was sent to Jamaica in 1838 at the age of 17 under the guardianship of his uncle, Richard Barrett. He lived at Dixon House and was active in local politics, becoming a member of the Legislative Council, winning the seat for Trelawny and St James in 1884. Educated for the clergy, Edward George was ordained as a priest of the Church of England in 1851 and served as curate at Stewart Town Church in Trelawny.

He inherited several estates from his father, including The Ramble, Albion, Rio Hoe, Haddon, River Head, and Alderton Store. He confided in his sister Lizzie about his intended marriage in 1855, though it appears not to have taken place.

He left his properties to his nephew, Edward Alfred Moulton-Barrett, son of his sister Lizzie and cousin Alfred Moulton-Barrett. In his will, he also made bequests to the children of Mary Harvey, all of whom bore the surname Barrett.
