File
1876-1887
1 box
A collection of autograph letters and cards from Robert and Sarianna Browning to Miss and Mrs Stoddart, who lived on the Isle of Arran in Scotland. The letters and cards date from 1876 to 1887. There is 1 autograph letter from Robert Browning to Mrs Stoddart (25 October 1876), 1 autograph letter from Anne Egerton Smith to Miss Stoddart (18 August 1877), 9 autograph letters from Sarianna Browning to both of the Stoddarts between 1886 and 1887, and 3 greetings cards from Robert and Sarianna (in Sarianna's hand).
Also included are 2 typescript copies of the autograph letters from Browning to Mrs Stoddart, 2 envelopes, newspaper cuttings and a folded manuscript list of "subscriptions" dated 1837, possibly originating from the school at which Miss Stoddart taught.

This collection of autograph letters and cards were passed down the Stoddart family. One of the Miss Stoddarts worked as a teacher at Calder Girls' School, Cumberland. It is presumed that she passed the letters onto the previous owner's relative, who established the school. They then passed down through the Wilson family until they were sold to Michael Meredith for his private collection in February 2006.
Kept together as a collection within one red leather box with spine title "Letters from Arran".
