1 volume
A collection of autograph drafts by Mary Russell Mitford, from 1811 to 1834. There are autograph drafts of 'Julian' (1823), Charles I (1834), the dedicatory verses to her poem 'Christina, the maid of the South Seas' (1811) and an unidentified prose manuscript.
Julian (1823): The first draft of Act III (nineteen pages). Heavily corrected ; without names of speakers. There are considerable differences from the text as it is printed in volume I of her 'Dramatic Works' (1854). Dozens of lines in the manuscript version were not included in the printed version. In addition there are eight pages of other versions of three portions of Act III.
Charles I (1834): The first draft of major parts of Acts II to V, including two versions of Act III. Heavily corrected, without names of speakers. In addition there are twenty four pages of scenes with Cromwell's daughter Alice, a character omitted from the printed version. Also eleven unidentified pages and a fair copy of Act V.
The autograph prose manuscript is a closely written text dealing mostly with Miss Mitford's own dramas and the actors in them. Possibly a draft of a periodical contribution. 26 pages 8vo.
