Browning, Robert (1782-1866)
[1782-1866]
4 envelopes and 1 volume
A collection of caricatures and two sketches by Robert Browning Snr. Each caricature has a a number, picture and a rhyme or caption below in manuscript:
1. A set of thirteen loose caricatures drawn c.1840 specifically for an unknown person who met Browning at the house of William Dows. This provenance information is given in a detailed autograph description that accompanies the set, presumably by the person for whom these caricatures were intended. Unfortunately it lacks a name or signature.
2. A bound volume containing three sets of caricatures c.1835, two in colour and one in black and white. With some rough pencil sketches on the endpapers.
3. Two surviving caricatures from different missing sets. One is numbered 18 and is in colour, and the other is numbered 1 and is in pencil rather than ink.
The sketches are of the Pied Piper of Hamlin, inspired by the character in his son's poem, and 'Bruin the bear'. 'Bruin the bear' is a pencil sketch of a bear with a rhyme below that was purportedly drawn for Robert Browning and his sister when they were children.
