Autograph manuscript of Hardy's poem 'Gallant's Song', which appeared in his final volume of verse 'Winter Words' (1928), p. 129.
Eight lines on a single page, oblong 8vo.Paper watermarked 'Printer Dorchester'.
The poem was originally written in an old notebook in 1868 and this manuscript is a fair copy in Hardy's hand with one autograph correction in pencil changing the title from "Dandy's Song" to "Gallant's Song", and a note "Nov. 1868 from old note-book" at bottom.
Accompanied by ALS from Dr. J. W. Mackail to C. W. James in 1931.
Presented to Dr. J. W. Mackail by Mrs Hardy, probably in gratitude for his memoir of Hardy printed in the Order of Proceedings at the unveiling of the Kennington Statue, September 2, 1931. Mackail gave the manuscript to C. W. James, husband of the previous owner. Later acquired by Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr. and sold at the 2001 Sotheby's auction of his Hardy collection.
