Bound in a single volume with related material by Sydney Cockerell. a: 'The Song of the Soldiers' from The Times, 9 September 1917. b: First proof titled 'For National Service / "Men Who March Away" / by Thomas Hardy". With manuscript corrections by Hardy and a change of date in the colophon. Hardy changes 'For National Service' to 'A Call to National Service'. c: ALS from Hardy to Sydney Cockerell, dated 31 March 1917, discussing National Service in war time. d: Second proof titled 'A Call to National Service / Before Marching and After / Men Who March Away / By Thomas Hardy'. It is marked "Rev" on the t.p. and the poems 'Before Marching and After' and 'Men Who March Away (Song of the Soldiers)' are crossed out in pencil. e: Typescript of the poem 'Cry of the Homeless', presumably by Florence Hardy, with manuscript addition to title and one textual correction in the author's hand. f: Third proof titled 'A Call to National Service / An Appeal to America / Cry of the Homeless / By Thomas Hardy'. With ms. corrections by Hardy. g: ALS from Hardy to Sydney Cockerell, dated 26 September 1917. h: 'For National Service', first appearance in The Times, 12 March 1917. Loosely inserted: Facsimile of the 'Before Marching and After' autograph manuscript Reprint of an article from The Times, 20 October 1952, by Sydney Cockerell Postcard addressed to Sydney Cockerell featuring a photograph of Hardy 'Labour and the war' address that Hardy refers to in an ALS bound in this volume.
