Administrative / Biographical history

In 1903, Edward Gordon Craig has first begun to formulate ideas for setting up a school, to train young enthusiasts in all aspects of the theatre. However, it was not until 1913 that his school was founded when he began to lease a disused open-air theatre, the Arena Goldoni. The theatre also became Craig’s studio/workshop as well as the offices of the ‘The Mask’.

The school closed in 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War.

Affiliated to the Gordon Craig School for the Art of the Theatre, the Society of the Theatre, also set up by Gordon Craig, aimed to promote the art of the theatre.
