E.A. Craig collection: Edward Gordon Craig’s ‘Black figures’
Sub-series
Edward Gordon Craig first began developing his ideas for his ‘Black Figures’ in 1907 when he carved wooden figures to accompany his model for 'Hamlet' and created prints out of them. This was done through applying ink to one side of the figure and producing a print that resembled a brass rubbing. It became one of his most famous techniques, exhibited widely as an example of his graphic art.
1907-1989
5 boxes
This sub-series contains the wooden figures carved by Craig and the ‘black figure’ prints he created from them. It includes figures and prints from the Hamlet series, Don Juan (Bryon) series, Merchant of Venice series, Greek Drama series and various other subjects.
Most of the figures have handwritten annotation by Gordon Craig on the reserve with the character, the date, his initials, a number and occasionally additions further details such as the purpose of the design. The number recorded by Craig has been noted in the catalogue and corresponds to the number given in Lindsey Newman’s published reproductions, where the original figures were unnumbered, these were given a ‘U’ number by Craig and this has been recorded in the catalogue.
Both the figures and the prints are contained in specially made boxes with mounts.
The prints have been signed and dated by Gordon Craig in most cases.
